Electrolysis Modalities

Each modality has its benefits and drawbacks so choosing an electrologist who is proficient in all 3 is incredibly valuable because it provides the most options when developing a treatment plan.

Generally speaking, your electrologist will select an appropriate modality based on your hair, skin, and goals, however, if you feel strongly about receiving treatment using a specific modality, please let us know and we would be happy to design your treatment plan accordingly.

Thermolysis

Thermolysis uses short bursts of high-frequency radio waves to generate heat inside the follicle, cauterizing the blood supply and killing the hair.

The use of high-frequency current allows for short treatment times per hair, but because hairs are not electrically conductive, the heat may struggle to effectively reach all regions of a distorted follicle.

Galvanic

Galvanic electrolysis uses longer applications of direct current to generate small amounts of lye inside the follicle, chemically denaturing the follicle and killing the hair.

Galvanic electrolysis was the first method of electrolysis invented and while it remains effective, it is very time-consuming compared to more modern methods and for this reason, other modalities are often preffered.

Blend

Blend combines a lye-generating direct current with short bursts of high-frequency current. This combination speeds up the otherwise very slow process of galvanic electrolysis by adding heat to speed up the chemical reaction.

The use of both currents in a single modality allows for the much more efficient use of lye to kill hairs and is often the preferred method for treating distorted and stubborn hairs.
